Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh government has decided to handover Multi-purpose Cyclone Shelter (MPCS) buildings across the State to Village Organisations (VOs) of Self Help Groups (SHGs). The Union government under National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Project had earlier sanctioned 232 Multi-purpose Cyclone Shelters (MPCS) in the nine coastal districts of the State, of cost varying from Rs 85 lakh to Rs 3 crore.

It will be the responsibility of the SHGs to manage and maintain these shelters. According to official sources, about 1,142 cyclone shelters constructed earlier, are in a dilapidated condition and are not suitable for human habitation due to lack of shelter management and maintenance.

The sources said if maintenance welfare committees consisting of women Self Help Groups were formed then it would become easy to maintain them. The government not only issued orders to handover MPCS buildings to the Village Organisations (VOs) of the SHGs, but also directed to take further action in consultation with CEO of SERP to select the Village Organisations (VOs) of the SHGs and procedures for handing over the MPCS buildings being constructed under NCRMP for optimum utilisation of MPCS buildings.
