Fervour marks Metlotsavam
Alipiri footpath, one of the trekking pathways to the hill shrine of Lord Venkateswara, reverberated with religious chants and bhajans, in the early hours of Monday, as 2,000 bhajan devotees took part in the auspicious Metlotsavam fete.

As many as 2,000 bhajan devotees gathered at 5 a.m. near Alipiri and took part with religious fervour in the hour-long preliminary rituals.
They later walked the flight of steps singing compositions in praise of Lord Venkateswara. The devotees trekked the Tirumala hills, in the process, smearing turmeric and vermilion paste and lighting camphor on each and every step. They also performed pujas on the steps before starting their holy trek.
Metlotsavam also known as the ‘Festival of Steps’, was organised by Hindu Dharma Prachara Parishad (HDPP), one of the propagation arms of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams. Speaking on the occasion, Joint Executive Officer (Tirupati) Pola Bhaskar said, “Acharya Purushas like Saint Annamacharya, Vysaraja Yatiswara, Purandhara Dasa, Sri Krishna Devaraya and others trekked the footpath route on barefoot and served Lord Venkateswara till their last breath.
To sustain the legacy laid down by them, we have commenced the annual fete of Metlotsavam, he said and added that hereafter the fete will be conducted four times in a year. He said that trekking the sacred Tirumala hills from Alipiri Padala Mandapam, on barefoot, in Brahma Muhurtam is a commendable spiritual experience.
He urged the bhajan devotees to take part in the dharmic activities in their respective places and act as torchbearers of Hindu Sanathana Dharma. HDPP secretary Prayaga Ramakrishna, Deputy EO Dhananjayulu and others took part in the fete.
