Kakinada: Minister for Finance & Planning, Commercial Taxes, Legislative Affairs Yanamala Ramakrishnudu reiterated that exports and imports through ports is vital for the development of industrial sector. He said the Andhra Pradesh government realising the potential of ports as economic multipliers, is focusing on developing more ports in the State to give a boost to port-based development along the 970-odd-km coastline in the State, the second largest after Gujarat.

Releasing a souvenir on industrial opportunities in East Godavari district at a programme organised by District Industries Centre (DIC) at GRT Grand Hotel here on Sunday, the Finance Minister said at present, there are 11 minor and one major port in the State. He said four more ports under the management of GMR, will be set up soon, to kick-start economic development in these parts.

He said the total number of ports in East Godavari would be three after the set up of a new port at Tondangi in East Godavari. (The other two ports include anchorage and deep water port in Kakinada). The Minister said Kakinada container terminal is all set to commence operations at the deep water port to cater to the export needs.

The Minister said East Godavari has conducive environment for industrial growth with vast natural resources and availability of land in Peddapuram industrial area and KSEZ, which was set up in an area of 9,000 acres.

Yanamala said to increase economic activity, a railway line and a parallel road are being developed between Vizag and Kakinada as part of infrastructure development. He said the ever growing services sector will provide employment opportunities to large number of youth.

The Minister cited the port-based development in Singapore, Malaysia and Mauritius and said that the State has big plans to develop ports and added that port-based development will get a fillip in the State.

Deputy Chief Minister N Chinarajappa revealed that various measures are being initiated to promote port-led development and industrial activity in the State.

East Godavari ZP Chairperson Namana Rambabu, Kakinada city and rural MLAs V Venkateswara Rao and P Ananta Lakshmi and others were also present.
