Vijayawada: Drinking water pipeline laying works taken up by the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation near the head water works at Bhavanipuram and on canal road at One Town will be completed very soon. The civic body is trying to complete the 1,200 metres pipeline works at the earliest. The civic body had taken up the works four months ago because of Durga temple flyover works started in Bhavanipuram. Pillars of the Durga temple flyover works will be laid at the same place where the old drinking water pipelines exist.

In order to clear the way for flyover works, the VMC has decided to dismantle the old pipeline. It had laid two new pipelines near the head water works and on canal road. The old pipelines will be removed and water will be supplied to the city through the new pipelines, which were laid at a cost of Rs 14 crore.

The VMC used heavy machinery and drafted staff to complete the work on a war-footing basis in four months. The National Highways Authority of India is constructing the flyover bridge near Durga temple. Executive engineer, circle one, VMC, Om Prakash, said on Friday the length of the new pipelines is 1200 metres from head water works to canal road.

The civic body has been planning to remove the old pipelines and lay the new pipelines for a long time. Due to funds crunch and other reasons, the works were pending for a long time.

Finally, due to Durga temple flyover construction works, the existing old pipelines dismantled and new pipelines were laid by the VMC. Earlier, the old pipelines were damaged several occasions due to passing of heavy vehicles on the national highway.

Water supply was disrupted many times due to leakages and bursting of pipelines. Finally, the city got new pipelines near headwater works and Canal road to supply drinking water to more than 30 divisions in the city.
