The Polavaram Irrigation Project first phase works will be completed by 2018 to supply water to farmers, said Major Irrigation Minister, Devineni Umamaheswara Rao. The Minister visited Pattiseema Lift Irrigation Scheme (PLIS) and Polavaram project area along with District Collector Katamneni Bhaskar on Friday and inspected the ongoing works of PLIS and Polavaram projects.
​Polavaram (West Godavari): The Polavaram Irrigation Project first phase works will be completed by 2018 to supply water to farmers, said Major Irrigation Minister, Devineni Umamaheswara Rao. The Minister visited Pattiseema Lift Irrigation Scheme (PLIS) and Polavaram project area along with District Collector Katamneni Bhaskar on Friday and inspected the ongoing works of PLIS and Polavaram projects. He also reviewed the rehabilitation programme of displaced people under Polavaram project.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that three villages would have to evacuate partially near the construction site.
He stated that the L&T company and Baur Company of Germany jointly took up the diaphragm wall construction. Under rehabilitation package, he said about 11 crore cubic metres earth work has to be completed in the area and so far 2.60 crore cubic metres work has been completed, he added.
The Minister said the diaphragm wall is the vital part for construction of Earth-cum-rockfill dam. The wall will be constructed to a stretch of 1.75 km long and 110 metres (330 feet) deep at the project’s rockfill dam. After constructing the diaphragm wall, the earth-cum-rockfill dam will be taken up. Besides this, a spillway construction which can withstand 50 lakh cusecs of flood water capacity would also be constructed, he said.
By June 2016, the spillway and diaphragm wall construction preliminary works will be completed and by June 2017, the left main canal works will be the completed, the Minister said. He said that the government will review everyday work progress of the project for its speedy completion. He said about seven tribal villages are under the project construction area and already evacuated people from four villages.
Discussions are on to evacuate the remaining three villages, the Irrigation Minister stated. He further said that to take up the rehabilitation programme for the three villages, 675 houses have been constructed in another area. Drinking water, power and other basic amenities will be provided for these villagers, he promised. He said that the government allotted Rs 100 crore for this rehabilitation.
Later, he interacted with the tribal villages and inquired about the housing programme. Earlier the Minister visited PLIS works and said by this month ending, Pattiseema project works will be completed. He said that so far 24 motors were installed at the project area and after June, during the rainy season 100 TMC water will be diverted to River Krishna.
