The Inland Waterways Authority of India is planning to finalise the tenders to develop waterways from Muktyala to Amaravati within 15 days. The 85-km long waterways would help transport cement at cheaper price as majority of cement industries are located on the border of Krishna and Nalgonda districts.

The survey for developing water transport was already completed. The successful bidders have to identify the waterways in Krishna river as it is necessary to maintain 2.5 metres depth and 50 metres width for sailing of 1,000 tonnes capacity barge. Speaking to The Hans India, IWAI deputy director V Sridhar said once the tenders are finalised,

the bidders would start identifying the dedicated channel route in the river by taking into consideration the existing structures and depth levels. He said once the waterways are developed, they would help transport of cement, fertilisers, rice, food grains and coal at cheaper price in the State.

The Inland Waterways Authority of India chairman Amitabh Verma said that the tenders would be finalised within 15 days and the project would be taken up under national waterways 4. He said that development of waterways would help cheap and pollution-free transport.

In a recent stakeholders summit on development of national waterways, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu directed the IWAI officials to speed up the tenders process and design barges as per the existing structures on the river. The Chief Minister said that the water transport would reduce the cost of transport in a big way.

He asked the IWAI officials to develop inland waterways in State, to reach 5 per cent from the present 3 per cent in the country against 42 per cent in Netherlands. He said once inland waterways are developed, it would help promote tourism in the State.
