Ponnuru (Guntur): Even as Rishiteshwari’s suicide is still fresh in minds of people, yet another incident of a B Tech student taking the extreme step was reported from the district on Saturday. The deceased was identified as Kancharla Amulya, 18, a resident of Kasukarru village of the district, who was pursuing B Tech first year in an engineering college at Chirala.

She was allegedly subjected to harassment by Kurapati Sarvonnata Rao of the same village in the name of love. When she shared the experience with the family members, they made her discontinue education and sent her to Hyderabad. Even then there seems to be no let up in the harassment with Sarvonnata Rao following her trail to Hyderabad.

Decided to fix Amulya’s marriage, the parents brought her to the village and even searched for an alliance in Mangalagiri. In this backdrop, Sarvonnata Rao stepped up pressure on Amulya. Unable to withstand it, a deeply disturbed Amulya committed suicide and her body was found hanging from the ceiling.

Ponnuru CI Chandrakala said that a case was registered following a complaint lodged by father of the victim and the Rural police are investigating the case. Later, Andhra Pradesh State Women’s Commission Chairperson Nannapaneni Rajakumari visited the bereaved family and assured it of her support.

She directed the rural sub-inspector Meesala Rambabu to arrest the culprit within 24 hours. She minced no words when she said that the culprits would not be tolerated under any circumstances and will be brought to the book. In her personal capacity, she gave Rs 3,000 to the family to meet expenses.

Later, talking to media, she said that it was unfortunate to note that such an incident should have taken place in a poor family. To prevent recurrence of such incidents, the culprits should be punished sternly, she added.
