Vijayawada: Demanding a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the family of farmers who committed suicide, Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham (APRS) will stage a protest near Alankar theatre here on March 18 and 19. Talking to the media here on Sunday, APRS State secretary Vangala Subba Rao came down heavily on Telugu Desam government for not taking up measures to make agriculture profitable.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu who promised to waive off farm loans and failed, he alleged. A meagre amount of Rs 7,400 crore was sanctioned and repaid to the banks under loan waiver scheme out of the total Rs 87,500 crore. The loan amount interest shot up to Rs 18,000 crore during this period. The banks were pressurising the farmers to repay their loans with interest.

But the farmers were not in a position to repay the loans and committing suicides, he said. The APRS State secretary said that about 650 farmers have committed suicide in the State since 2014, but only 47 farmer’s families have received the compensation so far. No measures were taken by the government to provide housing facility under Indira Awas Yojana (IAY) and education for the children of deceased farmers.

In these circumstances, State government which should explore the possibilities of reducing farmer’s suicides was blaming that farmers have availed loans for personal works , he said. The APRS State president V Balaram was also present at the news conference.
