Hyderabad: Scores of activists of the Left parties were detained by police in the city on Tuesday when they tried to force their way towards Andhra Pradesh Assembly to participate in the “Chalo Assembly” stir.

Activists of 10 Left parties staged a dharna near Indira Park in protest against Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu’s failure to bring pressure on the Centre to accord special category status to the State and announce packages to backward areas in the State.

Speaking at the meeting, CPI State secretary K Ramakrishna accused the Chief Minister of prostrating before the Centre to keep his position safe by mortgaging the interests of Andhra Pradesh.

Though Naidu hails from Chittoor, he betrayed the district by cancelling the Kandaleru water supply scheme that provided drinking water to villages and towns in 45 mandals. He also failed to exert pressure on the Centre to provide special package to Rayalaseema, he added.

CPM State secretary P Madhu launched a tirade against the NDA government for failing to fulfil promises made in the AP Reorganisation Act before bifurcation of the State. The leaders of the Left parties flayed the Chief Minister’s Amaravati-centric approach and said that the TDP government was focusing only on the development of capital city, leaving other areas more so Rayalaseema in the lurch.

They lamented that Chandrababu Naidu does not even have time to meet the kin of 168 farmers, who committed suicide in Anantapur district.
