Hyderabad: The YSR Congress party on Wednesday accused the State government of neglecting the backward areas like, Rayalaseema, north coastal Andhra and parts of Nellore and Prakasam districts.
Participating in a debate on the development of backward areas in the State, Bobbili MLA Ravu Venkata Sujay Krishna Ranga Rao questioned the government for their lack of interest on Polavaram Left Main Canal (PLMC). “The PLMC would help supplying Godavari water to backward region of north coastal AP, which includes irrigation and drinking water to Visakhapatnam. When the government could spend Rs 2,000 crore on Polvaram Right Main Canal (PRMC), why not at least Rs 1,000 crore to PLMC,” he pointed out. The MLA felt that Maddulavalasa Reservoir, Vamsadhara Stage – II, Janjhawati Irrigation Project, Totapalli were not given due importance. Stating that jute mills in Vizianagaram and Srikakulam have been shut down, he accused the government of inaction, while people are losing jobs. Citing the findings of the Sri Krishna and Siva Rama Krishnan committees, MLA Srikantha Reddy said that the Rayalaseema and north coastal districts have remained backward, due to the concentrated development in one place. He demanded the CM to take up the issue of Ranga Reddy- Palamuru Lift Irrigation Project with TS CM as it would adversely affect the interests of Rayalaseema. He also questioned the government’s intentions on not making adequate allocations to complete phase I and II of Handri-Neeva, Galeru-Nagari, Mylavaram and Gandikota projects. Y Visweswara Reddy found fault with the economic and development model adopted by the State government. The Oravakonda MLA said that the people of Rayalaseema and other parts are proud of the costal districts, for their contribution, to the food security of the State. At the same time, they too wanted development of their region, which is a just demand. However, Ministers Palle Raghunatha Reddy, Devineni Uma and Mrunalini refuted the allegations of government neglecting or showing discrimination against any region.
