Hyderabad: If breath analyser tests are just for road users, the South Central Railway (SCR) is mulling to introduce these tests for railway staff as part of safety measures to bring down the rate of even minor accidents. The advice was given by SCR General Manager Ravindra Gupta at a review meeting held on safety through video conference on Friday.

The Divisional Railway Managers of all the six divisions of SCR - Secunderabad, Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Guntur, Guntakal and Nanded - attended the high level safety review meeting. The General Manager took division-wise position of safety records including minor incidents and issued guidelines to overcome them.

The General Manager took stock of incidents, unsafe conditions (like rail breakages, weld failures, jerk messages, brake binding, smoke/fire, overhead equipment failures) and other irregularities etc. He also advised to conduct breath analyser tests earnestly and conduct safety seminars regularly for the staff involved in train operations.

He also took stock of the progress of work on elimination of unmanned railway level crossings (UMLCs). During the year 2015-16, SCR has eliminated 68 UMLC’s as against a target of 48. He also cautioned to observe all precautions during summer and plan in advance for the coming monsoon season.
