Nellore: North zone traffic inspector of Nellore city Rama Rao was caught red handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a footpath vendor in here late on Thursday night. The inspector demanded the bribe from Md. Yousef Ahmed who runs a footpath shop at under-bridge close to Atmakur bus stand.

Yusuf is a resident of CRP Donka and has been running a shoe-mart on the footpath for last 20 years. Ever since inspector Rao took up his current assignment in January, he has been demanding Rs 5,000 per month from Yusuf. The harassment did not stop despite Yusuf approaching local leaders. Yusuf finally struck a deal with the inspector that he would pay Rs 15,000 for six months.

Yusuf tactfully recorded voice of the traffic inspector and approached the ACB a couple of days ago. They heard the conversation and asked him to tell the inspector that he would pay Rs 10,000. When Yusuf handed over Rs 10,000 provided by the ACB officials at Ganesh temple at Puppala street, ACB officials raided the spot and recovered the amount from the driver.

They shifted him to the II town police station and interrogated him. A case has been booked against Rama Rao.
