Vijayawada: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Friday directed the officials to work to ensure that the state is made drought-free. He also asked them to ensure that drinking water is made available to people in every village and take measures to see that water is available for the next kharif season starting end of June.
The state government is focusing more on improving water structures for both agriculture and drinking purposes. The Chief Minister had asked the officials to increase the number of drinking water sources in the villages and make them ready for this summer.
Chandrababu Naidu had instructed the officials to form resource committees at mandal level headed by MPDOs with AE of water resources department as nodal officer to monitor the water management in the villages.
He asked the officials to complete the formation of 10 lakh farm ponds proposed in the state to make water available for farmers.
He said that the government had already constructed 1.5 lakh farm ponds by now in various districts and wanted the officials to complete the balance 8.5 lakh farm ponds in the next three months.
He wanted the officials of the water resources department to ensure that the state provides drinking water to every village. He wanted them to keep a watch on the water availability in every village and make alternative arrangements to give them drinking water.
He wanted the officials to take drinking water supply on priority and protect the drinking water sources. The government should engage tankers to supply drinking water to the people in every village.
While expressing concern over the depleting ground water sources, he wanted the officials to take permanent steps to improve the ground water levels. He said that he had already issued instructions on construction of farm ponds, check dams and other water harvesting structures.
These structures should conserve rain water from the next season. He directed them to identify all streams, channels and canals and make them ready for the next rainy season. He also asked them to take up jungle clearance in the streams and rivulets.
Referring to the farm ponds, the Chief Minister directed the officials to develop ponds for every five acres of land. He wanted them to hold talks with the farmers, explain the usefulness of the ponds and take the required land for the pond.
He wanted them to use machines if required to construct these farm ponds, but advised them to use manual labour under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.
The Chief Minister also reviewed the prevailing heat wave in the state. He instructed the officials to open more water kiosks at all public places.
