Visakhapatnam: Rivalry between two rowdy gangs has been worrying the city police as more and more anti-social elements were joining these gangs extorting money from the traders and business persons. The police on Thursday arrested seven members of a gang and seized dangerous weapons from their possession.

Deputy commissioner of police Dr CM Trivikram Varma told reporters on Thursday that they had arrested the gang members which is being led by Merugu Chittibabu alias Chittimamu. The police seized four swords, two axes and iron rods from the gang. The City Task Force police team led by ACP I Chittibabu and Sub-Inspector A Hari Babu arrested the seven members when they were on their way to eliminate a key member of the rival gang near Kailasapuram area.

Varma said that the gang procured the weapons that were fabricated in a workshop near Marikavalasa area in the city. The DCP said there are two major gangs operating in the city-one led by Mohammed Kasim and Bathina Murali and the other by Reddi Venkata Siva Kiran alias Podugu Kiran and Chittimamu.

Both the gangs have been involving in extortion from small businessmen and running gambling dens at a few places in the city. Rowdy-sheeter T Anil Kumar was murdered by his rival gang led by Merugu Chittibabu and B Narasimha Murthy on May 9, 2015 as Anil Kumar earlier murdered Chittibabu’s brother Rajesh and his friend Nagesh in 2011.

The murder of Anil has pushed the gang-rivalry in the city and Kasim, who is brother-in-law of Anil, along with his gang, decided to take revenge and attempted to kill Kiran a few months ago. But the gang killed Kiran’s aide Narasimha Murthy near Zilla Parishad on March 14 this year. Since then, Chittimamu has been looking for an opportunity to eliminate Kasim and Murali.

Since Kasim is in remand for Natchu’s murder, Chittimamu and his gang was on their way to eliminate Bathina Murali, when they were intercepted and arrested. The arrested include Chittimamu, Tirupathi Arya Kumar, Mylapalli Sagar, Vinay Kumar, Ravi, Doulapalli Ammoru, Hiradhi Naresh, Karri Krishna and Pithani Shyam Kumar.

The DCP said that Chittimamu gang tried to extort Rs 2 lakh from a person on April 14. The victim was called at a place and kidnapped. He was released only after coughing Rs 4,500 in cash, gold chain, rings and cell phone.
