International Cleft Mission camp was inaugurated here on Thursday at GITAM University, jointly organised by Mission Smile India, GITAM Dental College and Hospital and GITAM  Institute of Medical Sciences and Research supported by Muthoot Pappachan Foundation.

Visakhapatnam: International Cleft Mission camp was inaugurated here on Thursday at GITAM University, jointly organised by Mission Smile India, GITAM Dental College and Hospital and GITAM Institute of Medical Sciences and Research supported by Muthoot Pappachan Foundation.

The main aim of this camp is to provide free comprehensive cleft care surgeries to children, who are suffering from cleft lip, cleft palate and other facial deformities. The organisers so far identified and registered around 150 children from north costal districts and planning to conduct cleft surgeries under the supervision of GITAM medical teams and some international experts for a period of seven days starting from Thursday.

After inaugurating the camp, GITAM University Vice-Chancellor Prof. MS Prasada Rao mentioned that along with surgeries the doctors must find out the reasons for cleft lip formations particularly through research works. He suggested to Muthoot Pappachan Foundation to establish Cleft Care Centre at GITAM to extend the help to more children in the region.

GITAM Dental College & Hospital Vice-Principal Dr Ravisankar observed that there are million children in the country, who are suffering from cleft lip and cleft palate, and very few are having medical access. He informed that with the help of Smile India Foundation, the hospital successfully conducted 103 surgeries and all the operations are successful.
