Three Maoists surrender to Vizag cops, cite ill health
Three Maoists including a woman area committee member (ACM), who carried a reward of Rs 4 lakh on her head, surrendered before the rural police here on Thursday. They include Korra Gasi (27) alias Jhansi of Koyyuru area in Vizag Agency and Maoist militia members Buturi Appa Rao (45) and Velusuri Lakshmaiah (30).
Visakhapatnam: Three Maoists including a woman area committee member (ACM), who carried a reward of Rs 4 lakh on her head, surrendered before the rural police here on Thursday. They include Korra Gasi (27) alias Jhansi of Koyyuru area in Vizag Agency and Maoist militia members Buturi Appa Rao (45) and Velusuri Lakshmaiah (30).

They said poor health and disillusionment with the Maoist ideology made them surrender to the police. Disclosing details to the media, SP (Visakha Rural) Dr Koya Praveen said that Gasi had been associated with the CPI Maoists since 2007 and was involved in 24 offences in the district which include exchange of fire between the police and rebels, abduction of the then Malkangiri District Collector Vineel Krishna and few other offences.
Gasi was the ACM of East Visakha Joint Division and also worked in Andhra-Odisha border (AOB). She had undergone training in medical service in Bastar region of Chhattisgarh. Gasi told reporters that few more leaders suffering from various diseases would follow the suit and surrender to the police.
She said the Maoist leaders were supplying them with medicines but they were deterred from undergoing treatment in cities fearing arrests.
The SP said that the militia members Buturi Appa Rao and Velusuri Lakshmaiah, both natives of GK Veedhi in Vizag were also fed up with the harassment meted out to them by the Maoists and surrendered.
The reward amount of Rs 4 lakh would be given to Gasi and Rs 10,000 each to the militia members, the SP added.
