Prices of vegetables are increasing in Vijayawada city due to increasing demand and decline of supply from other districts and states. Prices of tomatoes, potatoes, carrot, gherkins, beans, bitter guard, beetroot, capsicum and other veggies increased in the city in the last two months. The prices of cucumber, lady\'s finger, bottle guard remain unchanged during the last two months.

​Vijayawada: Prices of vegetables are increasing in Vijayawada city due to increasing demand and decline of supply from other districts and states. Prices of tomatoes, potatoes, carrot, gherkins, beans, bitter guard, beetroot, capsicum and other veggies increased in the city in the last two months. The prices of cucumber, lady's finger, bottle guard remain unchanged during the last two months.

Vijayawada city had witnessed a large number of marriages and important events like the inauguration of houses, shops and other events due to auspicious days in the month of April. Consequently, the demand and consumption of vegetables increased in the city. Tomatoes sold at 20-a-kg at Swarajya Maidan Rytu Bazaar on Tuesday.

Swarajya Maidan Rytu Bazaar is the biggest Rytu Bazaar in the city. More than 10,000 customers attend the Rytu Bazaar every day. Two months ago, the prices of these vegetables were lesser. The prices of tomatoes were only Rs 7 a kg in the last week of February. Prices of tomatoes are increased by two times in two months. Tomato is the favourite vegetable in almost all households in Vijayawada city.

Tomatoes are mostly imported from Madanpalle in Chittoor district. Tomato is also cultivated in Western Krishna district and parts of Guntur district. The price of carrot is also jumped from Rs 24 a kg in February to Rs 30 in April. Carrot is used for making Sambhar and other food items. Besides, carrot halva is also very popular in the city. Beans prices shot up from Rs 14 in February to Rs 24 in April.

Capsicum prices shot up from Rs 36 a kg to 47 in two months. Beetroot prices increased slightly from Rs 18 to 20 a kg. Gherkins prices also shot up from 10 to Rs 16 in two months. Prices of green chilly are also rose from Rs 26 to 38. Beerakaaya (luffa) prices increased from Rs 16 to Rs 20 and potato from Rs 12 to Rs 18 a kg.

Swarajya Maidan Rytu Bazaar estate officer M Srinivasa Sastry said the prices of most vegetables increased in two months and expected to increase further in the summer as production will come down. Meanwhile, the prices of vegetable at K Market in One Town and municipal market in Satyanarayanapuram were much higher compared to Swarajya Maidan Rytu Bazaar.

The prices of vegetables at these markets are between Rs 15 to Rs 30 a kg. Some vegetables like capsicum and carrot are sold at higher prices. Retailers, who sell veggies on bicycles and push cart are selling at exorbitant prices in the city. Due to unavoidable conditions, many people buy veggies from these retailers at the higher price.
