Visakhapatnam: All-party trade unions in the district condemned the repressive measures being taken up by the district authorities while dealing with the agitation of workers of Brandix India Apparel City, who have been demanding hike in wages.

District secretary of CITU S Ramesh said when the management of BIAC had given an undertaking to the workers in the presence of Anakapalli RDO that they would take a decision on the hike of minimum wages, there was no need for invoking Section 144 and forcing the women to return to the workplaces.

The trade union leaders condemned the action of Collector N Yuvaraj, who instead of making efforts to increase the minimum wages and improve conditions in the workplace, has been supporting the management and forcing the women to work. They said as per law the management can give more wages than the prescribed minimum wages, hence the Collector should prevail upon the management to increase the wages of these women who have been working since five years for a meagre salary of Rs 4,500.

Condemning the arrests of CITU leaders, A Balakrishna of Rythu Coolie Sangham said the repressive measures would compound the problem and demanded the release of the leaders lodged in various rural police stations. Meanwhile, CPM district secretary K Lokanadham blamed the Chief Minister for supporting the Brandix management on the issue of hiking the minimum wages.

He said that the NDA government at the Centre and TDP at the State have been opposing the trade unions in the SEZs on the plea that the foreign investors would run away.
