Visakhapatnam: Minister for Prohibition and Excise and BC Welfare Kollu Ravindra reviewed the drought situation in the district as In-charge Minister and member of Five Ministers Group formed by the Chief Minister on drought, with the senior officials here on Saturday.

The Minister enquired about the steps being taken to mitigate drought situation, on-going drinking water projects, borewells, irrigation projects, NREGA works and drinking water kiosks.

He asked the officials to increase the groundwater levels, recharge pits and farm ponds. The Minister said that the government had sanctioned Rs 3 crore for setting up of free drinking water supply kisosks, butter milk and awareness on ORS.

He sought the action plan for implementation of free distribution of water and butter milk.

Giving a PowerPoint presentation on drought mitigation measures, Collector Dr N Yuvaraj said the local bodies, along with a voluntary organisation, have set up 1,470 drinking water supply kiosks and 204 points for supply of butter milk.

Borewells were installed in every habitation facing water crisis and 8,268 points for distribution of ORS packets have been set up. The district medical and health department personnel distributed 40,415 ORS packets through the drinking water kiosks. Around 3,991 medical camps were set up and awareness camps were conducted to inform the people on the precautions to be taken at the time of severe heat conditions.

The Collector also informed the Minister on the decreasing level of water in the district reservoirs.

He also said a monitoring cell has been set up in the rural water supply and information is being sought from every mandal on a daily basis.On every Monday review meetings were being held with rural officials on the drought conditions. Zilla Parishad chairperson Lalam Bhavani was also present in the review meeting.
