The Minister inaugurated various development works in Tadepalligudem Mandal on Tuesday. As part of Neeru-Chettu programme, he toured Arugolanu, Jagannadhapuram, Dandagarra, Madhavaram, Venkatramannagudem, Peda Tadepalli and Modugukunta villages and inspected the drinking water tanks.

Speaking at the meeting organised on the occasion, the Minister regretted that though River Godavari and Godavari canal were nearer to these villages, groundwater levels had drastically depleted. In view of the alarming situation of groundwater levels, everyone should dig soak pits in their houses. He called upon the people to participate in the de-silting of tanks and develop the tank canals.

He pointed out that in Maharashtra, the groundwater levels have almost depleted and severe drought conditions prevailed. It was an issue of great concern for the Centre and State Government. Due to severe drought, so many people were migrating from Maharashtra. He said that Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat had sent water through railway tankers to Maharashtra.

“In view of the situation, we have to be alert and have to concentrate on improving the groundwater levels from three to 8 metres,” the Minister said. Manikyala Rao directed the irrigation officials to prepare plans in advance to avoid inundation problem of farmlands from irrigation channels.

Some villagers informed the Minister that there was a possibility of a flood from Kotlamma Cheruvu, an irrigation tank, and other irrigation tanks. The Minister, responding to the problem, directed Irrigation EE Satish and DEE Venkateswarlu to inspect the irrigation tanks and channels and take steps to set up drain and surplus channel. MPDO Dosi Reddy presided over the meeting.

Village Sarpanch Malaka Venkatrao, MPTC member Sahadevudu, society president Nukala Bulliyya and others participated in the programme.
