Neither the municipal officials nor the police went to the colony on Saturday to forcibly evacuate the residents who are facing allegations that they had been living illegally in the colony. 

Vijayawada: YSR Colony in Jakkampudi village, which witnessed high tension on Friday due to expulsion of families by VMC officials for allegedly not having valid proofs, was peaceful on Saturday.

Neither the municipal officials nor the police went to the colony on Saturday to forcibly evacuate the residents who are facing allegations that they had been living illegally in the colony.

It may be recalled that the VMC officials forcibly expelled nearly 200 families from their homes in YSR Colony on Friday and locked doors.

Tension gripped the colony on Friday from morning to night due to excess force used by the police and the VMC.

The VMC officials searched the documents and proofs in some blocks and noticed that some residents shifted from a slum near the Wholesale Vegetable Market near the PNBS are not eligible to stay in the YSR Colony.

Due to heavy rains started on Saturday early morning, many residents broke opened the doors, which were locked by VMC officials and took the shelter.

The VMC officials are saying that only 62 families will be allowed to stay as they are eligible for the housing.
The fate of remaining 330 families is not known.

The residents suspect the VMC officials will re-start verification very soon and expel more families. Till then, fear haunts these families as Friday’s bitter memories are fresh in their minds.
