Tirupati: Padmavathi Mahila Viswa Vidyalayam Vice-Chancellor V Durga Bhavani inaugurated medicinal plants garden with 1,200 saplings of different varieties on the occasion of the World Environment Day at Sri Padmavathi Mahila Viswa Vidyalayam campus on Sunday.

Speaking on the occasion, she said: “It is the collective responsibility of all of us to preserve the biodiversity and natural heritage citing this year World Environment Day’s theme which is to fight against wildlife crime and illegal trade of wildlife.” She called for effective measures to avoid extinction of endangered species.'

She further added that ayurveda garden would help the students of sericulture, biotechnology, microbiology and pharmacy to undertake research projects on ayurveda medicines.

Rector Prof V Uma said that the World Environment Day is celebrated to create awareness on environmental issues and promote actions to bring positive changes, while registrar Prof P Vijaylakshmi sought to inspire students to do the maximum possible for restoring the lost harmony of nature.

Marking the occasion, plantation drive was taken up on the university campus. School of Social Sciences dean M V Ramanamma and others were present.

Sri Venkateswara University observed the World Environment Day by taking up plantation drive on the campus. Speaking on the occasion, SVU rector M Bhaskar said that it was the follies of human endangering environment making life difficult on the planet.

The indiscriminate felling of trees coupled with plundering of forest resulted in natural calamities like floods and landslides causing loss of human lives and properties, he said and adding that protection of environment is key to human living. He wanted to take up tree plantation as a movement.

Regional Science Centre in association with AP Pollution Control Board (APPCB) celebrated the World Environment Day by organising an open house quiz for students and general visitors. Second Additional Junior Civil Judge BLV Seshadri was the chief guest.

Addressing the students, he said the laws were framed in the Constitution to protect environment and onus lies people to protect it.

Sri Venkateswara University HoD of environment department Prof Damodhar, Indian Redcross Society district secretary Ramadevi and others also spoke.
