The alarming rise in the number of unrecognised schools has prompted the State government to launch a drive to make these institutions obtain recognition from the Education Department or face action.

Kakinada: Over the past few years, fake schools have become a roaring business in the district. In the absence of a proper mechanism in the School Education Department to check the functioning of all educational institutions, 89 unrecognised schools have flourished in the district.

The alarming rise in the number of unrecognised schools has prompted the State government to launch a drive to make these institutions obtain recognition from the Education Department or face action.

While the School Education Department keeps a close watch on the recognised institutions, it has failed to check the growth of unrecognized schools in various parts of the State on the ground that they are illegal.

Though the Andhra Pradesh Education Act lists punitive action against the erring institutions, which lack infrastructure and basic facilities, the negligence in conducting routine inspection has allowed the schools to go scot-free.

The threat of heavy penalties and jail term has not bothered these managements. The school managements cite the stringent rules as the stumbling block in seeking recognition from the government. Despite stern warnings, these schools have failed to adhere to the rules.

Speaking to The Hans India, District Education Officer R Narasimha Rao warned parents not to admit their children in the schools functioning in the district that are yet to obtain No Objection Certificate (NOC) or Certificate of Recognition.

The DEO asked the schools to apply for NOC immediately and warned of action against the schools if they continue functioning without the certificates. He also asked parents not to admit their children in the schools that do not have recognition. The details of unrecognised schools in the district can be obtained from the website deoeg.org, he added.

Senior UTF leader and State Audit Committee member of the organisation K Sati Raju says bribery is responsible for flourishing of fake schools in the district. He said the tendency of some corrupt officers including MEO, Dy EO and RJD to take bribes is responsible for the flourishing of fake schools. These officers allow such fake schools to flourish, he added.

He said that it is a fraud to run any school without recognition and urged the State government to take steps to ensure closure of unrecognised schools.
