Vijayawada: “Please feel free to reach out to police stations in the city at anytime and we are here to help you,” Commissioner of Police Gautam Sawang promised senior citizens at a meeting convened here on Sunday. The Commissioner said the police were always ready to help the senior citizens and resolve their problems.

He was the chief guest at the meeting organised at Hotel Ilapuram by Andhra Pradesh Senior Citizens Samaakhya. The meeting was arranged to create awareness on the Maintenance and Welfare of the Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007. Gautam Sawang said our Indian system believes in respecting elderly parents and it will continue forever.

He said elderly people have good wisdom and their children take their guidance to take important decisions. He said senior citizens too have rights along with other people to live and enjoy their life and appealed to them to live happy till the last moment of their life.

He said the police would give all types of assistance and guidance to the senior citizens whenever they come to the police. He tried to convince the elderly people saying that he was a man of actions but not the man of words and committed to help the senior citizens at any cost. He tried to cheer up the mood of elderly people at the meeting. He said the police have taken the suggestions from senior citizens to tackle Call Money problem in the city.

Education counsellor M C Das said the Government was neglecting the rights and responsibilities of senior citizens. He demanded the government to distribute medicine free of cost to the senior citizens above 60 years of age and provide medical facilities to them irrespective of caste and religion.

He has regretted that a large number of elderly people were neglected by own family members in the country and underlined the need for the change of this tendency.

Former MP Chennupati Vidya said the government enacted laws for the protection and welfare of the senior citizens in the country and appealed to the senior citizens to live normal life as other citizens do. Nearly 400 senior citizens attended the meeting, which helped them to share their feelings and thoughts. They got consolation from the inspiring speeches made by guests.
