Visakhapatnam: Mangroves are the trees that grow in estuarine (low saline) environment where slushy soil conditions prevail and help mankind in mitigating vagaries of natural calamities like cyclones and high speed gales by protecting the nearby habitations, prevent soil erosion by holding soil with its root system, said Kannur District Collector (Kerala) P Bala Kiran.

He was addressing at the inaugural session of the second national seminar on ‘Conservation-restoration and sustainable management of mangrove forests in India’ organised by the Centre for Mangroves and Coastal Ecology and Institute of Forest Biodiversity (IFB) here on Wednesday.

Bala Kiran informed that mangroves also play a key role in nutrient cycling of coastal zones, act as nursery areas for fish, prawns and crabs. People living around also rely on the mangroves for food, timber, chemicals and medicines and in the 2004 tsunami, the mangrove forests proved their effectiveness in protecting coast lines, he added.

Director of Institute of Forest Biodiversity, Hyderabad Dr G R S Reddy said despite its great social, economic and environmental importance, the extent of mangroves was being reduced at the rate of 1 to 2 per cent per annum due to anthropogenic influence through deforestation.

It is essential that awareness on the importance of mangroves is created among public to enthuse them to participate in the conservation activity. With this backdrop, the IFB is organising the national seminar,” he aded.

Collector N Yuvaraj said that the State government was giving equal importance for all horti-culture crops prioritising mangroves, banana and coconut groves encouraging the farmers by providing various subsidies.

It was also proposed to go for massive plantation with all fruit-bearing saplings in this rainy season, he added.
