A tale of two PHCs

Atmakuru (Kurnool): The Primary Health Center at Yerramatham has been functioning with skeletal staff as most of the medical and paramedical staff working there has been transferred out leaving the hospital at the mercy of Kotturu medical officer who has been given charge as in-charge medical officer.

As the PHC is located in Nallamala forest region no medical officer or paramedical staff have been evincing interest to be posted there throwing the emergency medical services to winds. An ANM working on contract basis and a field assistant are left with managing the centre. The tribal PHC caters to medical and health needs of five tribal hamlets having a total population of 7000.

The Chenchus allege that the medical officer who has been given charge of the PHC did not report for duty so far. There is a danger of outbreak of viral fevers during the rainy season. Moreover, in case of emergencies like snake bites, child birth there is no immediate medical help on hand. The tribals have no alternative except availing medical services at the cluster hospital here, which is 30 km away from Yerramatham.
