Srikakulam: The proposed nuclear power plant at Kovvada in Ranastalam mandal will pose a threat to people and environment in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam, said former CPM general secretary Prakash Karat. He visited the NPP affected villages Kovvada and Kotapalem on Saturday and participated in a public meeting at Kosta village junction.

Speaking on the occasion, Karat said that Rs 45 to Rs 48 crore is required for generation of one megawatt of nuclear power and each unit will cost around Rs 15 which is high and burden on the government.

He cited the example of Fukushima nuclear reactor, which was exploded in 2013 in Japan, and the mishap caused a vast damage. Hence, Japan has been closing nuclear reactors though it has advanced technology. USA has not installed even a single reactor in the country and Germany closed about 20 reactors in the recent past, Karat elaborated.

Initially, the NPP was proposed at Mithivirdhi in Gujarat, but the CPM has launched agitation opposing the proposal. Later, people, too, opposed it and a local BJP MLA was also joined the fight against the NPP. Therefore, the plant was shifted to Kovvada in Ranastalam mandal, he reminded.

He questioned both the Central and State governments why they are showing interest on the NPP by neglecting other renewable energy resources like coal, wind and solar which require less investment. To install six reactors at Kovvada about Rs 2.80 lakh crore is needed, he pointed out.

Karat interacted with the fishermen community elders of Kovvada and Kotapalem villages. Later, he visited sea coast near the villages where NPP has been proposed. CITU State secretary Ch Narasinga Rao, district secretary Duppala Govinda Rao organised the programme.
