Visakhapatnam: Adulterated liquor trade is thriving in the district, with businessmen virtually playing with the lives of people by mixing spirit and water in various brands being sold by them. They are also filling bottles with substandard liquor.

Recently when a mini-auto coming to Visakhapatnam from Odisha was intercepted, liquor bottles were found along with those containing water and spirit. Those transporting the stock told the police that the bottles were being moved to Nukambika Wines in Anakapalli. Officials who raided the wine shop were in for a shock to find adulterated liquor in bottles. The shop which has been selling liquor was sealed. Residents were shocked to realise that liquor stocks in the shop are adulterated and angry with the owners.

Inquiries by the police revealed that the traders are resorting to two types of adulteration—mixing either spirit or water after removing 25 per cent original liquor and replacing the brand labels. They are using spirit procured from Pune and Bihar, as it does not raise any suspicion among consumers. The traders are allegedly paying experts in adulteration Rs 5,000 each for preparing such stocks.

With such unhealthy practices being adopted by the liquor traders, doubts have been raised over the stocks being sold by shops in other areas. People of the district want Prohibition and Excise officials to wake up and take action against such traders.
