Rajamahendravaram: The State government is mulling another lift irrigation project on River Godavari at Sithanagaram near Ramachandrapuram in East Godavari district and it will be completed next year, said Water Resources Minister Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao here on Sunday.

He said the project would be linked to Yeleru at 58th kilometre. It would stabilise 90,000 acres of ayacut under Yeleru reservoir.
Even though the capacity of Yeleru reservoir is 25 tmc ft, he pointed out that the reservoir never stored more than 8 tmc ft of water.

He maintained that water would be brought to Visakhapatnam through Polavaram left main canal (PLMC) by 2017. He reiterated that Polavaram project would be completed by 2018 at any cost.

Speaking to reporters in Rajamahendravaram, Uma Maheswara Rao said that linking of Vamsadhara and Nagavali rivers is being taken up at a cost of Rs 1,000 crore and works of Vamsadhara second phase are being executed at a cost of Rs 424 crore.

He informed that efforts are on to release water to the full ayacut under twin Godavari districts and under rivers Krishna, Vamsadhara, Thotapalli and Nagavali.

With regard to Polavaram project, the Minister said that the State government allocated Rs 2,500 crore in this year’s budget and the Centre is yet to reimburse another Rs 2,077 crore spent on the project.

He mentioned that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu urged the Prime Minister as well as the Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti for the reimbursement.

Stating that lakhs of cusecs of Godavari water was going waste into the sea, he said under the Pattiseema Project, 80 tmc ft of water would be diverted to Krishna delta and water would be taken to Rayalaseema through Pothireddypadu head regulator.

Devineni Uma came down heavily on YSRCP president Y S Jagan alleging that he was obstructing the projects and conspiring against Polavaram and Pattiseema projects.

He wondered why the opposition leader was posing hurdles to water flow into Rayalaseema. He suggested to Jagan to act as a constructive opposition leader.

Deputy Chief Minister N Chinarajappa, Rajamahendravaram Mayor Pantam Rajani Sesha Sai, MLAs Akula Satyannarayana, Gorantla Butchaiah Choudary, NVSN Verma and Gollapalli Surya Rao were present on the occasion.
