New Delhi: The Congress party is making all-out efforts to see that the private member’s bill on the Special Status for AP gets all-round support. As part of this, KVP Ramachandra Rao, who has proposed a private member's bill in the Upper House sought the support of Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
In a letter to Jaitley, Ramachandra Rao on Wednesday stated that all the amendments he had proposed in the bill were endorsed by senior BJP leader from the state M Venkaiah Naidu in the Rajya Sabha on February 20, 2014.
He pointed out that the BJP had not insisted on division for passing the party's amendments then as it was satisfied with the response of the Treasury benches. Contending that after two years of the bifurcation the state was in a very bad financial and emotional situation as none of the provisions of the Act had fully been implemented, Rao said he was forced to bring in the bill.
Hence, it would be appropriate if Jaitley along with all his party MPs voted in favour of the amendments proposed now, he added. Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee chief N Raghuveera Reddy who had extended his stay in Delhi wrote a letter to AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu urging him to direct his party MPs to vote in favour of the bill.
In his letter, Raghuveera questioned Naidu's motives for his silence on the bill despite his claim that he had been pursuing the matter with the Centre sincerely. Naidu should have planned an all-party delegation to Delhi to secure the Special Status for the state as the BJP-led Centre was unwilling to sanction the same.
Reiterating that his party was not interested in petty politics and claiming that there was no mala fides behind introducing the private member's bill now in the RS, Raghuveera said that the only purpose for this exercise was to do some good for the people in the state.
Pointing out that in the past when the Centre had accorded a similar status to 11 states, all that it had to do was pass a Cabinet decision in favour of the same, Raghuveera said Naidu should have used his influence in Delhi to force the Centre to do so in case of AP too. Later talking to the media, Raghuveera said he had also sought the support of all political parties, including the TRS for the bill.
