Vijayawada: The impact of holidays was clearly visible at the pushkar ghats in and around Vijayawada on Monday, the fourth day of Krishna Pushkaralu.
Monday being national holiday on the occasion of Independence Day, a large number of pilgrims thronged the five ghats in Vijayawada right from early morning and celebrated the holiday with family members and friends.
Highlights:
- The attendance of pilgrims recorded during the last four days in the State is 53.89 lakh
- As many as 19.87 lakh pilgrims took a holy dip in three districts of Krishna, Guntur and Kurnool by pm on Monday
- 7.06 lakh pilgrims visit various ghats in Vijayawada city

- Locals are visiting ghats more than once, thanks to free RTC bus services
The joyful moments continued from morning to evening at the pushkar ghats, which are attracting lakhs of pilgrims not only from Andhra Pradesh but also from other States as well. With the administration making elaborate arrangements for the devotees, the pilgrims took holy dip in Krishna waters and fulfilled their wishes.
The pilgrims who took holy dip in the river in 170 ghats in the three districts of Krishna, Guntur and Kurnool by 5 pm on Monday stood at 19.87 lakh. As many as 7.06 lakh pilgrims visited various ghats in Vijayawada city alone. During the last four days, 53.89 pilgrims took holy dip in River Krishna in the three districts.
As usual, Krishnaveni and Padmavathi ghats in the city witnessed heavy rush of devotees right from the early hours.
Thousands of pilgrims from different parts of State arrived at the five satellite bus stations and satellite railway stations and then directly reached the pushakar ghats in RTC buses operated free of cost.
The RTC is plying 400 special buses and 370 regular services free of cost for the convenience of pilgrims. Bus services passing through all main roads in the city are leading to pushkar ghats upstream and downstream of Prakasam Barrage. A large number of locals too are visiting ghats for bathing as well as recreation. Interestingly, many local devotees are taking bath more than one time during these Pushkaralu due to free bus services facility.
The educational institutions too declared holidays to schools and colleges in the district. All these factors promoted the youth, women and children to celebrate and take part in the mega river festival. Huge rush was witnessed at Punnami Ghat, Durga Ghat and Bhavani Ghat on Monday.
These three ghats have plenty of fresh water as inflows from Pattiseema and Nagarjunasagar are continuing for the last few days. Pilgrims who attended Godavari Pushkaralu in Rajahmundry last year are now comparing the arrangements with the present Pushkaralu and expressing satisfaction over the elaborate arrangements and supply of sufficient water packets and food at bathing ghats and Pushkar Nagars.
Nearly 70 NGOs are supplying lakhs of food packets to the pilgrims at pushkara ghats, Pushkar Nagars, bus stations, satellite bus stations, main railway station and satellite railway stations. K Ramana, a pilgrim from Tadepalligudem, who came to Krishnaveni Ghat said he was delighted with the arrangements and food supplies.
Recounting his past experience in Godavari Pushkaralu last year, he said he suffered many problems for accommodation and transportation as well as food in Rajahmundry. He said the food supplied by NGOs in Vijayawada was good.
The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation is supplying lakhs of drinking water packets to bathing ghats and Pushkar Nagars. Besides, local drinking water plants are also supplying lakhs of packets free of cost. Some NGOs are supplying butter milk to the pilgrims.
As the scorching heat continues even in August, the elderly people and children are suffering a lot. Due to free supply of sufficient water packets, they are getting some solace.
