Chittoor: With the gap between demand for potable water and supply widening due to various reasons, the business of supply through private tankers appears to be flourishing in the city.As most of the wells have gone dry with the groundwater table hitting abysmally low depths, residents have turned to private water suppliers who are now cashing in on the situation.
The people, instead of relying on the Chittoor Municipal Corporation tankers, choose private tankers as they can deliver water anywhere anytime. The tankers feed the huge demands of hotels, hospitals, private colleges and business establishments, besides households. There are more than 125 private water tankers operating in and around the city that has witnessed demand going up manifold in the last couple of months alone.
Residents depend on private tankers as the civic body’s water supply has turned erratic. In many localities people receive piped water supply only on alternative days.Due to inadequate rainfall, the residents have been facing water scarcity for the past five years. Hence, they prefer water supplied in lorries, which lasts up to a week. As many as 32 private water suppliers supply 11 million litres per day (MLD) pocketing Rs 1.5 lakh.
Speaking to The Hans India here on Sunday, Municipal Commissioner Suresh said there are about 24 tankers operated by the corporation in the city. The water is treated properly and then chlorinated before being supplied to the residents, he added. He informed that there are seven mineral water plants in the city.
He said the corporation has been taking all steps to provide tap connections to each and every household in the district for ensuring adequate water supply for residents in the city. He said the city’s water needs are met through NTR Jalasayam.
