Visakhapatnam: GITAM University chemistry department head and researcher Prof M Saratchandra Babu has invented hydrogen storage material to store the hydrogen fuel in automobiles in a safer way. He has also registered two such materials for patent rights. He announced his inventions at the Research Forum meeting held on the campus here on Saturday.

While briefing on his invention Babu said that replacing gasoline-using vehicles with hydrogen-fuelled fuel cell vehicles would reduce CO2 emissions significantly in coming years. He briefed that hydrogen being an energy carrier has great potential to become a major fuel for both mobile and stationary power generation and eco-friendly fuel for vehicles of future and it has three times higher energy density by mass compared to gasoline.

He announced that GITAM University Nano Technology Research Centre has developed two nano materials to store the hydrogen fuel in a safest manner and the research project was supported by Centre for High Technology, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

Hybrid Engine: Prof Babu said Nano Technology Research Group is now planning to develop a hybrid engine with the help of mechanical engineering department to suit the hydrogen fuel vehicles. The department is approaching Department of Science and Technology to support the project.
