Tirupati: Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) has taken up the installation of Hydrant system, a fire fighting system, to enhance the safety measures in the super specialty hospital.

Though such fire safety measure is direly required for any big hospital like SVIMS, so far there was no fire control apparatus in the biggest super specialty hospital in Rayalaseema, except the hand operated fire extinguishers set up at SVIMS.

Noticing the lacuna in fire safety after taking the reins of SVIMS, its Director cum Vice-Chancellor T S Ravi Kumar decided to have the Hydrant system with an outlay of Rs 1.90 crore. The installation work of Hydrant system, which was formally kick started recently by Ravi Kumar, expected to be completed in two or three months.

Ravi Kumar said that the Hydrant system will be laid to an extent of three kilometres to cover all the institutions in the sprawling SVIMS complex, including all the hospital wings, Nursing College, Physiotherapy College, Sri Padmavathi Women MedicalCollege, to ensure proper safety.

In the next stage, SVIMS contemplating to install smoke detecting sensors and alarm for further enhancement of fire safety in the hospital. Simultaneously, training staff, including sanitation, ward boys, nurses and others, would be taken up in batches on fire safety measure and handling the Hydrant system.
