Tirupati: Tirumala, the abode of Lord Venkateswara, witnessed a heavy turnout of pilgrims, thanks to the consecutive holidays from Saturday to Wednesday. A record number of 1,10,662 pilgrims had darshan on October 10, while the following day also (October 11) 1,01,859 had darshan in the shrine.

In fact, the pilgrim flow, which started increasing on Friday itself due to Garuda Seva conducted as part of the annual Brahmotsavam, but rush went on increasing till Dasara. On Friday, 82,721 had darshan, which increased to 93,119 on (second) Saturday and further to 95,067 on Sunday before reaching its peak with 1,10 662 had darshan on October 11, which is the highest so far in the famous Tirumala temple. The rush started declining on October 12 with 85,307 had darshan at Tirumala temple.

The total income through hundi offering from Saturday to Wednesday was Rs 13.26 crore. It is pertinent to note that the pilgrims tonsured during the period also more than the normal number. In all, 2.25 lakh tonsured their heads in five days. TTD executive officer D Sambasiva Rao said that minimising the time set for protocol VIPs, which was only half an hour during the holidays, which also coincided with the annual Brahmotsavams coupled with cancellation of Arjitha Seva enabled the temple management to cope with the heavy rush and providing darshan to more number of people.
