Eluru: Anganwadi staff staged a dharna in front of collectorate here on Monday, demanding the district administration to provide biometric attendance system at anganwadi centres.

The workers and supervisors led by Andhra Pradesh anganwadi Workers and Helpers Union, held a rally to the collectorate and staged a dharna. The union chairman K Vijayalakshmi, president P Hymavathi and secretary P Bharati, who addressed the gathering, said that Anganwadi helpers and workers were facing problems with having to travel long distance to mark attendance in the biometric system.

“The anganwadi staff has to be in duty by 9 am. With the officials making biometric mandatory, they have to travel all the way to nearby government offices that open only at 10 am. Due to this, the staff has to bear extra expense in travelling and precious time is getting wasted,” they said and demanded to install biometric at anganwadi centres.

They expressed concern that due to these systems, they have to wander around the government offices for attendance and when they return to the centres, children are back to their homes.

The protesting staff alleged that Community Development Project Officers (CDPO) and supervisors have threatened them not to participate the agitation and warned of sever action.

They also demanded the government to pay the gratuity to the retired anganwadi staff, apart from sanctioning transport charges to the staff for supplying food to the centres from ration depot. Later, they submitted a memorandum to the district collector.
