Thousands throng banks to get new currency notes

Kadapa: Serpentine queues were witnessed at the banks and post offices which were open on Thursday. People were seen waiting for securing new denominations like Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 for their old notes. Almost all the banks and post office branches were packed and crowds started trickling in from 9 am onwards. However, bank authorities issued new currency Rs 2,000 note since new Rs 500 note was unavailable on Thursday. However, some banks issued Rs 100 rupee notes by accepting up Rs 4,000 from the costumers.

According to the sources, Rs 25 crore worth banned notes exchanged across the district. Following the directions of the government, banks issued new notes on securing either Aadhaar card or any other identification card issued by the government.

The depositors, who were having Savings Bank Account (SBA) permitted to deposit up to Rs 50,000 without any restrictions and if it is more than that, he or she had to submit Permanent Account Number(PAN) card. Meanwhile, due to lack of proper planning in issuing new currency notes, triggered confusion as some banks couldn’t handle the bulging crowds.

It is learnt that some banks have closed the counters related to the exchanging of notes exactly 4 pm with some customers returning home disappointed. However bankers said there should not be much crowds from Friday as the all ATM will be active round-the-clock as the account holders can draw the amounts.
