Visakhapatnam: The Polavaram project will permanently solve the water problem of the district by providing 24 tmc to the district, said Minister for Panchayat Raj Ch Ayyanna Patrudu. Similarly, eight lakh hectares of land would come under irrigation and fulfill the drinking water needs of the city permanently.

Addressing the fourth phase of Janmabhoomi and Maa-Vooru organised in the South constituency at the Indira Priyadarshini Municipal Stadium here on Wednedsay, the Minister said the Janmabhoomi programme is being held at regular intervals to create awareness among the people on the projects being launched by the government and implementation of welfare schemes launched by the government.

He said so far 4,500 km of road was laid in the villages and this year another 5,000 km would be added to increase the communication. He said five lakh houses were being built for the homeless in the villages and 20 lakh in the urban areas.

“All homes will have gas connections under Deepam scheme by end of June this year,” the Minister added. Regarding Victoria General Hospital, the Minister announced that Rs 5 crore would be spent from the MLAs funds for the development of the hospital which caters to the needs of the poor. This maternity hospital is very important not only for the city, but also for the surrounding villages, he added.

He said that the municipal stadium will also be developed for which Rs 13.25 crore has been sanctioned. Since the GVMC has no funds, money from VUDA would be spent.
