Vijayawada: Director General of Police (DGP) N Sambasiva Rao warned of stringent action against persons indulging vandalising and damaging the statues and flexes of political leaders and cine actors in the State.
The DGP took serious note of the recent incidents taking place in the State like damaging the statues and flexis of leaders in Vijayawada and Tallayapalem in Kalidindi mandal of Krishna district and Atapaka village of West Godavari.

Sambasiva Rao held a press conference at his camp office on Monday to issue a stern warning to anti-social elements. He said that some anti-social elements were trying to create unrest in the society by demolishing the statues and tearing the flexis.
He said the film actors’ fans associations and followers of political leaders have been erecting flexis and statues in restricted public areas against norms, he said.
Referring to some recent cases, the DGP made it clear that associations or individuals, who arrange the statues and flexis must take responsibility for their protection and maintenance, he said.
The DGP, however, assured that during the night times, police patrolling teams would keep a vigil at the sensitive areas to prevent untoward incident. ‘These incidents are leading to clashes between caste, groups causing law and order problem in the society,” he added.
Sambasiva Rao made it clear the police would identify the persons involved in such acts and punish them, he warned. He cautioned that fans of film stars and supporters of politicians should not cross their limits by venting their ire at rivals.
Stating that some such incidents might be committed by drunkards, he appealed to the people to help the police department to maintain law and order. Referring to damage to farmer MLA late Vangaveeti Mohana Ranga Rao’s statue in Ajith Singh Nagar in the city Vijayawada on Sunday morning, he said police had collected some clues and culprits would be arrested.
He assured that Ranga’s statue should be reinstalled at the same place. Investigation was going on the Kalidindi and Atapaka incidents too, he added.
The DGP said that a GO Ms No. 55 issued by the State government in April, 2003, on guidelines regarding erection of statues in public places in the State would be implemented strictly.
He wants these guidelines should be implemented first by municipal towns in the State. Police department started enumeration of statues in the State and would submit a report to the government very soon, he said.
