Nellore: Protest of the municipal workers demanding the State government to withdraw GO 279 has entered second day in Atmakur on Wednesday. More than 100 municipal workers belonging to various departments in the municipality are taking part in protests. The civic workers under the banner of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) staged a demonstration in front of the municipal office on Wednesday. Residents are worried of contracting swine flu as garbage is piling up with municipal workers protest. The civic workers are opposing the GO which allows handing over maintenance of sanitation, drainage and street lights in civic bodies to contractors.

Speaking to the media, former Municipal Vice-Chairman Sk Sandani demanded the State government to regularize the services of municipal workers. He alleged that municipal officials and council members were trying to remove the workers, who have been working in the municipality since 2012. “We are not getting salaries regularly till now. If GO is implemented then the municipal workers will face severe difficulties to eke out their livelihood as they have to rely on the contractors for salaries,” said Sk Muneer, a sanitary supervisor. Every day, municipal workers collect 8 to 10 tonnes of garbage in the town. Residents are facing severe inconvenience with the heaps of garbage lying on the streets, following the municipal workers strike.
