An old-aged couple charred to death as fire broke out in their hut at Duvva village of Tanuku Mandal, on Tuesday. According to eye-witnesses and fire officials, Vegirouthu Satyanarayana (70), a borewell mechanic had been manufacturing crackers at his thatched house upon receiving orders for various functions, unauthorised.

Eluru: An old-aged couple charred to death as fire broke out in their hut at Duvva village of Tanuku Mandal, on Tuesday. According to eye-witnesses and fire officials, Vegirouthu Satyanarayana (70), a borewell mechanic had been manufacturing crackers at his thatched house upon receiving orders for various functions, unauthorised.

On Tuesday, around 5.00 PM, the neighbours heard explosions immediately rushed to the couple’s house, only to discover that thatched house was in flames and a parapet wall of the house was collapsed. Vegirouthu Satyanarayana and his wife Manikumari (54) were trapped under the collapsed wall. When the local people tried to rescue the couple, the flames engulfed all over the house.

The locals immediately informed fire personnel. Before reaching of the fire tenders from Tanuku, the house was completely burnt to ashes and the couple charred to death. The Tanuku MLA Arimilli Radhakrishna reached the village and enquired the local people about the incident. He extended some financial support to the victims’ children for cremation and other expenses.

The remains were sent for autopsy to Tanuku Government Hospital. Tanuku rural police registered a case. It has to be established whether the fire accident occurred due to cracker blast or short-circuit of the power supply. Fire officials said the accident occurred due to blast of crackers.
