Officials of Municipal Administration and Urban Development said that Municipal Minister P Narayana proposed the idea of establishing junior college. The purpose is to provide best education to the municipal school students coming from poor financial background and after completion of their school education.
A senior officer said that the college would have 80 seats only with MPC and BiPC courses (40 seats for each course).
“The Municipal Administration Department has taken a decision on establishing the college in principle and is framing guidelines. It will take a week to secure clarity over the matter,” he said. Most of the officials are in favour of starting the college in Vijayawada, he said.
Minister Narayana is focusing on providing quality education in municipal schools. An advanced foundation course has already been introduced for 10th class students in municipal schools in the state following the directions of the minister.Students are being selected on merit basis for the foundation courses.
“We are focusing on increasing the number of students getting 10/10 score in SSC examinations this year. It is the first time we are making such efforts to achieve best results in municipal schools. Teachers are also being given extra salaries to conduct special classes,” said VMC education officer B Durga Prasad.
However, there is some opposition from parents on separating students of the same class in the name of merit and holding special classes at another school. The VMC is conducting classes under advance foundation course at CVR municipal school and selected 10th class students of all municipal schools are being given special coaching at the school. The VMC arranged auto facility to pick up the students at their schools to carry them to CVR School.
