Vijayawada: Two Town police arrested the accused in a rape case and produced him before the media here on Friday. Though the incident took place on May 14 it came to light on May 24. Addressing a press conference at his chambers, Deputy Commissioner of Police for Law and Order G Pala Raju said that K Ranga Babu (28) raped a woman near Mustabad in Kesarapalli. “The accused was an auto driver and victim is a resident of Komala Vilas Centre at Kothapeta in the city. She is living with her husband near Subrahmanyeswara Swamy temple in the Kothapeta,” he added.

He said that the victim and her husband were working in the binding shop in the city. “The victim’s husband was injured while discharging his duties and was taking medical treatment for spinal cord injury at New Government Hospital in the city.
DCP said that the accused promised to the victim for arranging money to her husband’s treatment while victim was traveling in the accused auto.

He said that Ranga Babu also went to the New Government Hospital, along with the victim, to meet her husband, but he had not met the victim’s husband at the hospital. Later, he picked up the victim from the government hospital at 8 pm on May 14 and drove his auto towards Kesarapalli and raped the woman.

DCP said that the accused had tried to escape from the city after the incident came to light through the media. Police used CCTV camera footage for arresting the accused.
