Amaravati: The state government sanctioned special imprest amount of Rs 25 crore for the miscellaneous and immediate needs of Polavaram Irrigation Project (PIP), on the directions of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, on Monday.

The superintending engineer, PIP head works circle, Dowlaiswaram, and subsequently engineer-in-chief, PIP, earlier submitted proposals to the government suggesting certain payments like daily wages, diesel, lubricants purchases as part of the project execution needed funds.

They said that suitable guidelines for operation of the special imprest account will be formulated and submitted separately.
After examining the proposals, the state government accorded sanction of special imprest for Rs 25 crores to the superintending engineer which will be utilised for arranging payments directly to the parties concerned based on the request of the agency.

The water resources department in its report said that the government wants to complete substantial works of Polavaram head works by June, 2018 for diverting Godavari water into canals by gravity and total works of the project by June, 2019 and ensure the benefits early to the people of the state.

To meet the deadline set by the government, the contracting agency Transstroy has to coordinate all the activities of works as per the approved construction programme. Various components of the project like diaphragm wall under earth-cum-rock fill dam, spillway concreting works, fabrication of radial gates, spill channel excavation, power house foundation excavation works are already in progress and at various stages of completion.
