Vijayawada: The state government is planning to set up beer parlours round –the- clock in the name of attracting foreigners to tourism spots in the State. Addressing the media persons at Secretariat here on Tuesday, Minister for Excise K S Jawahar said that a new excise policy would be introduced based on Supreme Court guidelines.

Opposing this move, All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) state secretary D Ramadevi alleged that the government was spoiling the future of the youth through the excise policy norms and CM must cancel the proposal regarding set up of round the clock beer parlours at tourism places in the state. She said crime rate and road accidents were increasing day by day due to consumption of alcohol.

Voluntary Health Education and Economic Development Unit (VHEEDU) founder and director M Vasu said that State government would lose income on tourism if excise department would set up these beer parlours and urged the government to set up beer parlours at places other than beaches, rivers and hill areas because people would face so many problems after consuming alcohol at beaches and rivers.

The peaceful environment at tourism spots would be lost due to these parlours and mentioned that the people would not come to these locations with family members.

CPI (M) leader M Sridevi said that women and girl students would face eve teasing and harassment due to these parlours in the state and alleged State government was treating these public places merely as source of income through the sale of alcohol.

She said that women and girls cannot move freely and CPI(M) would fight the government proposal with the support of all sections of women for changing excise policy norms in the state.
