Anantapur: CPI district secretary D Jagadeesh has opposed implementation of climate based crop insurance to farmers as it is not beneficial to farmers in the district which have extraordinary climatic conditions.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Jagadeesh said that the district did not register even average rainfall last year. 63 mandals were declared drought-hit and 29 mandals got a pittance insurance amount of Rs 6,000 per hectare.

Chennekthapalle received the lowest and was paid Rs 1,679 per hectare. The CPI leader said that farmers paid premium for 2.8 lakh hectares but none of them got crop insurance compensation. The CPI district committee's extended meeting will be held on July 1.

The meeting will take stock of the farmers’ conditions and issue an ultimatum to the government on the farmers’ issues. CPI Rythu Sangam district leader A Katamaiah, party executive members Gopal and Rama Krishna were also present.
