Visakhapatnam: The World Hydrography Day was commemorated by the survey ships and units of the Eastern Naval Command in order to promote hydrography and increase awareness of the hydrographic work being undertaken by the Indian Navy. A visit by students of Navy Children School was organised onboard INS Darshak to give insight of hydrographic operations.

The Day is observed every year on June 21 with an aim to increasing awareness about benign activities of hydrographers to assist mariners at all levels and for increasing the coverage of hydrographic information on a global level.

This year the theme for WHD is ‘Mapping our seas, oceans and waterways – More important than Ever’. Over the years, the Indian Naval Hydrographic Department has been responsible for hydrographic surveying in the country and has showcased national commitment in ensuring safe navigation, resolving maritime boundaries with neighbouring countries and also as part of its international responsibilities has provided coverage for marine safety information in the Navarea VIII region comprising Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal.

The Hydrographic survey ships of ENC have been extensively involved in conduct of surveys not only along the Eastern Coast of India, but also in friendly foreign waters as part of International Hydrographic Cooperation with littoral nations resulting in capacity building in the Indian Ocean region.

INS Darshak has recently undertaken hydrographic survey of Tanzania, Mauritius and Sri Lanka as part of foreign cooperation initiatives.
