Vijayawada: Toyota’s electric cars are all poised to roll on the Tirumala- Tirupati ghat roads on a pilot basis. IT Minister Nara Lokesh on Thursday said the Toyota company has donated 10 cars to ply in the pilgrim towns as a prelude to an MoU inked between the company and the AP government. The MoU will make way for a feasibility study on introducing electric vehicles in the state from May to December, next year.

The identification of charging centres and other required basic facilities would be mapped out during the study. Explaining the special features of electric vehicles, a company official said once the vehicles are charged, they can run up to 70 km. The vehicles can be charged in a span of 20 minutes. The MoU entered between Government of Andhra Pradesh and Toyota Kirloskar Motor, a subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation of Japan on Thursday intends to realise the latter’s objective to achieve clean and green eco-system in the successor state.The initiative will make way for a feasibility study to introduce a few electric cars (Prius PHEY and Small EV Commuter) on a pilot basis.

According to a Toyota’s spokesman, 10 cars will roll onto the roads initially. Minister for IT and Panchayat Raj Nara Lokesh facilitate the signing of the MoU. K Vijayanand, Principal Secretary, IT and Communications department, Ch Tirumala Rao, Chief Executive Officer of Electronics and IT Agency from the state government and Akito Tachibana from the Toyota group signed the MoU.

Lokesh told media in this connection that the MoU is a commitment of the Toyota and AP government to work together to solve the rising emission of carbon levels on account of explosion of vehicles run with fuel by introducing Plug-in-Hybrid and Electric Vehicles in the state. Toyota is a pioneer in the electrified vehicles in the world. Lokesh said he was delighted to witness the occasion and will look forward to introducing Toyota’s world class electrified vehicles in the smart city project at Amaravati.
