The Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) celebrated its Foundation Day to mark the 135th birth anniversary of the founder the late Seth Walchand Hirachand on Thursday. The birth anniversary of the great visionary is being celebrated every year as the Foundation Day at HSL.

Visakhapatnam: The Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) celebrated its Foundation Day to mark the 135th birth anniversary of the founder the late Seth Walchand Hirachand on Thursday. The birth anniversary of the great visionary is being celebrated every year as the Foundation Day at HSL.

Director (Corporate Planning and Personnel) HSL PHM Salih paid floral tributes to the founder in the presence of HSL employees and members of recognised staff and workers union.

Seth Walchand Hirachand was an industrialist and founder of Walchand Group of companies. Was born in a Gujarati Jain family and settled in Solapur in the erstwhile Bombay Presidency.

He had started his business in construction, sugar plantation, sugar factory, confectionery and engineering companies. Subsequently, he established India’s first modern shipyard, first aircraft factory and first car factory. Many of his business interests were not at all easy to fulfil in those days and situations during the British monopoly.

Strongly believing the need of shipyard in the country and had started work on it in 1941 and selected Visakhapatnamon on the East Coast as a strategic and ideal location and took possession of land.

Freedom fighter and the then acting Congress party President Dr Rajendra Prasad had laid the foundation stone for Scindia Shipyard Limited HSL on June 21, 1941 and India’s first steam ship ‘Jala Usha’ was sailed from the yard after independence by the then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in 1948.
