Tirupati: Chittoor District Collector PS Pradyumna initiated another unique programme of starting the construction of one lakh toilets on a single day. As part of ‘Palle Nidra’, the Collector participated in the Puja programmes for the construction of individual toilets in SR Puram, Karvetinagar and Puttur Mandals. This was in a bid to make the district Open Defecation Free (ODF) by March 2018 to facilitate the state government to announce Andhra Pradesh is ODF.
After intensive survey in every village through DWCRA women to find out the houses which are not having individual latrines, the officials came to conclusion still more than two lakh latrines need to be started. In the 2 lakhs, 1.02 lakh DWCRA women did not built the toilets though they were sanctioned to them.
The Collector quickly reacted to this fact and organised meetings with Self Help Group (SHG) members in all villages under the leadership of ‘Sanghamithras’ and administered an oath to every woman that she will make Bhumi Puja on Friday to build the latrine and complete the construction immediately.
Pradyumna took up the subject for Palle Nidra programme on this Friday also to motivate all officers to see that the Puja be completed to reach the target of one lakh toilets. Accordingly, by 10am on Friday, the people’s representatives, officials, staff, and DWCRA women performed Bhumi Puja and started the process.
The Collector first participated in a programme at Ksheera Samudram SC Colony in SR Puram mandal and completed Puja at the house of DWCRA member B Parvathamma. He assured the colony people that if they complete the construction of six toilets which were pending in 15 days then he will sanction CC road to their colony.
He participated in similar programmes in Karvetinagar and Puttur mandals also and asked people to complete construction of toilets within 15 days in the interest of their individual health and to have cleanliness in the villages. During the last three months, the Collector organised several awareness programmes in the district to make people aware of the importance of having an individual toilet.
He also took up several special drives and involved all government departments in the task as RWS and DWMA were not enough to reach the huge target. The Friday programme was aimed at starting the programme on war footing as people will not come forward to start any new programme from Saturday as they feel it as not auspicious.
It may be recalled that in September, he initiated a programme of providing basic amenities to Anganwadi centres in which power supply was provided to 1,824 centres and water facility to 1,153 Anganwadis in a single day as part of Palle Nidra programme. Earlier this week, the Collector’s brain child ‘Yashoda’ programme was launched aimed at training Anganwadi workers to improve services through capacity building by offering them diploma course.
